See if the DJ is knowledgeable about the music you want played. If the song is popular, they should be able to name at least 3-5 songs that they are going to play afterwards. A lot of DJs aren't great at reading crowds. Some play music they like, instead of what the crowd wants. You need someone who play hits that make people dance and sing along to. When people are tired of a certain genre, that DJ should know how to make that explosive transition. A great DJ makes or breaks your event.
